**Revised** Half Marathon Results are now available.

February 14, 2010

Hello Folks:

I have a couple important announcements regarding the Winter Series for the next two weeks:

bulletWe will (weather permitting) reschedule the Pick Your Way race, which was cancelled last Sunday the 7th, for next Sunday the 21st.
bulletWe will keep the same Race Director (Steve White) and volunteers for next Sunday the 21st; the only change we making for next weekend is the race itself.
bulletThe Staggered Start will held the following Sunday on Feb 28th.  The Race director will be Heather Haque.
bulletWe still need volunteers for the Staggered Start on the 28th.  We have an excess of volunteers for the 21st, so if you are one of them and would like to switch to the 28th (i.e., still work the Staggered Start on the new date), please let me know.
bulletIf you have not yet volunteered for any race this year and want to volunteer for the 28th, please let me know
bulletWe are once again running low on firewood, so if any one can make a donation to carry us through these last two weekends, i t would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

- Mark Zacharias, Winter Series Director

The half-marathon scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, February 14th, is on with the following advisories and notices:

Bucks County Roadrunners
Half Marathon Feb 14, 2010
Parking and Course Advisories

Parking

bulletParking in the park is at a premium.  I estimate a total of only 125 plowed spaces in the entire park.
bulletTherefore, runners are encouraged to carpool to the race.  Please contract friends and arrange to arrive at the park in as few vehicles as possible.  If you are looking for a place to meet, you should consider the shopping center near where 413 intersects with Durham Road, or at Council Rock North high school.
bulletThe lot near the boathouse is plowed, but the two lots nearest to the boathouse where we normally park are not plowed.  These lots have been driven on and the snow is somewhat packed down, so those of you with 4-wheel drive SUVs are encouraged to park in these lots to leave the plowed lots for those of use with wimpy sedans.
bulletEveryone is encouraged to arrive at the park 1/2 hr earlier than normal to allow for any issues with parking.  Note that when the lower lot gets about 3/4 full, we will be sending cars with only one passenger back to the upper lots to leave room for carpool vehicles.  We will start the race as close to 9:30 AM as possible.
bulletMy estimate is that there are about 75 spots in the boathouse lot, 45 in the Lower Plantation lot, 7 spots at the Park Office, and 15 spots in the lot by the bridge near the Guild Craft Center (the lot across for the Craft Center is not plowed).

Course Changes & Conditions

bulletWe will be altering the course to consist of 3 back loops of 4.2 miles each, for a total of 12.6 miles.  The 4.2 loop will consist of the 3.8 loop plus a spur out and back on the access road near the Guild Craft Center.  We will run the loops starting to the left for safety's sake.
bulletTwo thirds of the 3.8 loop is dry.  The rest is mostly soft-packed snow.
bulletThere are several places on the loop, most notably a moderately long stretch approaching the Craft Center, there the snow has drifted and, while packed, is quite deep.  While it is not slippery, it will be slow going and there might be some danger of twisting an ankle, so be prepared for these spots.   We will try to clear the worst of these areas by race time by you should expect to run into some areas of deeper snow.
bulletThere are a number of icy spots throughout the course.  The most dangerous spots are on the Lane Trail just approaching the Diary Hill Trail, and at and just below the intersection of the Diary Hill Trail and the Covered Bridge Trail.  You will be running down the Dairy Hill Trail at this point, so these areas should be run with a great deal of caution to avoid falling.

Boathouse Area

bulletThe path to the boathouse from the parking lot and the causeway are not shoveled, so you will need to be careful in these areas.  We will most likely try to clear part of the path down from the parking lot, but be prepared in case we are unsuccessful.
bulletThe causeway itself is not shoveled but is hard packed.  Please be very careful crossing the causeway bridge.  After announcements we will take our time getting over to the starting line to allow everyone a chance to walk carefully over the causeway.

February 6, 2010

The race scheduled for tomorrow, February 7th, has been cancelled due to ice and snow accumulation on the trails.  A decision on a possible rescheduling has not yet been made.

February newsletter is available.

The NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan is soliciting donations for their humanitarian missions.  On average, 3 missions are completed per month, and include the Kabul Orthopedic Clinic, the Indira Ghandi Children's Hospital, Zabuli Education Center for Girls and Women, MIRMUN girls' orphanage, and numerous refugee camps for the Hazarah and Kuchie tribes.

The Mission requests "new and gently used items including conservative clothing for men, women, children, and infants, socks, shoes, winter coats hats, gloves, blankets, school supplies, bags of rice, beans, or lentils and toys....lots of toys."

BCRR members who would like to contribute can bring donations to Tyler during the Winter Series.  The military will transport donations at no cost from New York, but donors in our area have to pay postage to New York, so we need monetary donations too.

When deciding what clothing to contribute, be aware most of the refugees live in mud huts, tents or buildings of rubble and ruins.   Their only heat comes from the bags of coal supplied by the Mission.  Let's concentrate on sending warmth to the Afghan people........coats, jackets, pants, sweaters, gloves, hats, long sleeve shirts, socks and shoes.  Fleece throw blankets, currently on sale in many stores, are very light weight (ie less expense to ship).     Be sure to include toys.  Religious items and anything requiring batteries or electricity are prohibited.

Collection boxes for donations will be available at the Winter Series race registration area every week.

Thanks to you and the club for supporting this effort!

From Mark Zacharias, Winter Series Director:

We've decided to reschedule the Jingle Bell as follows:

bulletThe Predict Your Time race has been moved to Jan 3rd.  We did this since it is just two days after the Cham-Pain 5K, and did not want runners to have to run hard if they didn't want to.  However, the Truman alumni (Chris T, Pete, and Greg - Chris M can't make it but I'm listing him anyway), will be Race Directors.
bulletThe Jingle Bell will be held on Jan 10th.  Joe Boyce will remain race director on that date.  I'm actually not listing it as the Jingle Bell, since we may want to come up with a new race name and theme, but the important thing is that it will be a regular 5.3 mile race that day.

December 19, 2009

Do to the snow storm and expected accumulation tonight, the Jingle Bell race scheduled for tomorrow morning (Dec 20th) has been cancelled.

We will have an update regarding possible rescheduling hopefully later this week.  Everyone stay warm and safe during the storm, have a great holiday, and we'll see you next Sunday Dec 27th for the Tyler Challenge 10K.

- Mark Zacharias, Winter Series Director

Are those old running shoes cluttering up your closet and those old race t-shirts busting out of your drawers?  Wouldn't it be nice to de-clutter for the new year?  Well, here is an opportunity to clean out while helping out a worthy cause - we will be collecting "gently used" shoes and clothing to donate to various charity organizations.

Just gather your items for donation and bring them to any Winter Series race.  They can be left by the wall behind the clothing sales table.  It would greatly appreciated if you would:

bulletlaunder all items, including shoes, prior to donation
bulletBring all items in a bag or box, and
bulletMark donations with a note or tag so that they will not be confused with other runners' personal items

If you have questions, please contact Emily Grace at emgrace@aol.com.

This year, we are hoping to donate these items to PARC (Philadelphia Apparel Recycling Campaign).  They have expressed interest but are very new and just getting organized.  Read about them in this recent article:  http://www.philly.com/philly/business/78115557.html

Some of you have received emails about joining a Yahoo user group.  Many of you have responded, but for those club members who have not, please do.  To quote the latest newsletter:

"We have established a BCRR user group for communicating with all members.  By subscribing, you will receive emails about weekly training runs, upcoming events, social outings, and other events on a much more frequent basis than is available either in the newsletter or on our website.  To subscribe, send a blank e-mail to bcrr-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.  To send an email to the group, address it to bcrr@yahoogroups.com."

This is a more flexible method to communicate than the guestbook we currently use on this website.  You can join by clicking on the above hyperlink.  Start now!
